Edson ÁlvarezWho is the star player?

Santiago Giménez, if he can rediscover match sharpness in quick time following ankle surgery in December. The AC Milan centre-forward will be supported by Fulham's Raúl Jiménez. Obed Vargas is one to watch; the 20-year-old was bought by Atletico Madrid from Seattle Sounders in February, and the Alaska-born midfielder could have represented the United States.

How do they play?

Aguirre is managing Mexico for the third time in his career, and will ponder whether to find room for two strikers in his team. Without Giménez, he has settled on 4-3-3, but goals have been a problem; a 4-0 win over Iceland is the only instance of Mexico scoring more than once in their last seven matches. There have been concerns about a lack of attacking cohesion, and Aguirre being too reliant on functional midfielders.

Chances of victory

Mexico's two best World Cup performances came as hosts, but another quarter-final appearance might be beyond them. Some fear the standard of the domestic league has fallen below what's on offer in the MLS. The loss of Marcel Ruiz to a cruciate ligament tear, and injury-hit seasons for Giménez and captain Álvarez do not bode well. Home advantage will help in a kind group, though. Last 16.

Burnley's Lyle Foster will lead the line. The striker started his career at Orlando Pirates before a big move to Monaco in 2019. Defenders Ime Okon (Hannover 96) and Samukele Kabini (Molde), both 22, also bring experience of playing in European leagues.

How do they play?

They were knocked out by Cameroon at the last-16 stage of the Africa Cup of Nations, but across their four matches at the tournament they averaged 62.25 per cent possession and 15.5 shots per game. Capitalising on that degree of dominance was their problem, and Broos playing three centre-backs against Cameroon's lone striker was questioned.

Chances of victory

Mexico were also group-stage opponents when South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010, progressing at South Africa's expense thanks to a superior goal difference. Some of the Afcon performances were encouraging, but finishing as one of the best third-placed teams might be the height of their ambition. Group stage

Patrik Schick won goal of the tournament at Euro 2020 after scoring from the halfway line against Scotland at Hampden Park. The Czechs will once again look to the Bayer Leverkusen centre-forward for goals, and to be a focal point for their attack. West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek is also a key player, and Premier League watchers are familiar with the threat posed by his late runs into the box and aerial threat from set-pieces.

How do they play?

In their play-off matches against Republic of Ireland and Denmark, when they progressed on penalties, Koubek played with a back three and wing-backs. He will look to make best use of their height and physicality, but this is not a team blessed with much flair. They will try to be direct and play the percentages.

Chances of victory

This is not the Czech Republic of Pavel Nedved and Karel Poborsky, but they could be competitive enough to sneak through as one of the best third-placed teams, or perhaps even finish ahead of South Korea. Last 32

Son Heung-min

Son Heung-minWho is the star player?

Few players in the tournament are adored like Son Heung-min in his home country, and his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Los Angeles FC thrilled the US city's considerable Korean diaspora. Son has been used in a more withdrawn role in the MLS, and has lost a yard of pace since he was tearing Premier League defences apart. The former Spurs man might play off Paris St-Germain forward Lee Kang-in, while Bayern Munich's Kim Min-Jae will be a stalwart at the back.

How do they play?

Hong Myung-bo has flitted between a back three and a back four in recent friendlies, but they are likely to deploy a front-footed approach in what looks like an open group. Playing 3-4-3 would allow South Korea's coach to get Son, Lee Kang-in and Wolves' Hwang Hee-chan further forward. Last Ocober's 5-0 defeat by Brazil, however, suggests a more pragmatic style will be required as the tournament progresses.

Chances of victory

They have a core of players at clubs in top European leagues and plenty of World Cup experience now, reaching the last 16 in two of the last three. That feels a realistic aspiration again. Last 32

Alphonso Davies

Alphonso DaviesWho is the star player?

Alphonso Davies is one of the most explosive full-backs in the game when he finds top gear, but has had a rough time with injuries. Davies tore his ACL in March 2025, and has suffered repeated muscular problems since his comeback. He has been deemed fit enough to include and will be desperate to make his mark in a World Cup on home soil. Canada will rely on Juventus striker Jonathan David for goals.

How do they play?

Rather like Ralf Rangnick and Austria at Euro 2024, former Leeds manager Marsch is trying to implement the "Red Bull philosophy" on a national team: minimum width, aggressive pressing and counter-pressing as well as fast, transition attacks. Whether he has requisite training time to perfect that approach in international football is open to question, and one wonders whether summer temperatures might require more energy-preserving spells of possession.

Chances of victory

Canada lost all three of their games at Qatar 2022, but peppered Belgium's goal for long periods of a 1-0 defeat and only lost by the odd goal to eventual semi-finalists Morocco. Getting out of the group is a minimum requirement. Last 32.

At the age of 40, Dzeko was Bosnia's top scorer in qualifying with six goals, and is still a totemic figure within the squad. The striker, a Premier League winner with Manchester City, is ready to stand up for his team-mates too, clashing with Wales manager Craig Bellamy during Bosnia's play-off victory in March.

How do they play?

Like their neighbours Croatia, they have a reputation for producing technically adept players who are comfortable playing a possession game, but they showed they can adapt in their two play-off games. Against Wales, they sat off and absorbed pressure in Cardiff, before putting Italy's 10 men under immense pressure to book their place at the tournament. Committed to using a flat-back four.

Chances of victory

Their group-stage draw could have been more punishing, and they will want to be competitive in all three games. Might just lose out to Canada and Switzerland. Group stage.

Akram Afif signed for Spanish club Villarreal as a teenager, but never quite made the grade in La Liga despite a brief loan spell at Sporting Gijon. He was Qatar's top scorer in their successful 2023 Asian Cup campaign, and has found the back of the net 41 times in 132 appearances for the national team. Afif has also scored 80 goals in 100 appearances for Al Saad, winning multiple individual prizes for his performances in Qatar's top flight.

How do they play?

Lopetegui has been a staunch advocate of a flat-back four throughout his coaching career, even switching Wolves to that system during his time in the Premier League. Out of necessity, containment will be the order of the day for Qatar this summer, sitting deep with two tight lines of four or a four and a five.

Chances of victory

Since winning their play-off against United Arab Emirates to book a place in North America, Qatar have lost against Zimbabwe and Palestine and drawn with Syria. It would be a major surprise if they finished anywhere other than bottom of the group. Group stage.

Granit XhakaWho is the star player?

Everything goes through Xhaka, Switzerland's left-footed midfield orchestrator who is now a hero at Sunderland. He has matured as a player and channels his competitive spirit in a positive way, and is a leader in every team he is involved in. Remo Freuler, Ricardo Rodriguez and Manuel Akanji are also stalwarts, though it is a squad lacking new blood.

How do they play?

Switzerland under Yakin like to play a possession-based style, building play deliberately through the thirds to use Xhaka's passing range. They have plenty of speed up front though, with Breel Embolo something of a tournament specialist and a nuisance for opposition centre-backs. Dan Ndoye and Rubén Vargas will offer trickery from the wings.

Chances of victory

Switzerland now expect to reach the knockout stages of tournaments on a regular basis, getting to the quarter-finals of the past two European Championships and last 16 at two of the past three World Cups. They are well-drilled and stable, but lack true blue-chip quality in attacking areas to progress much further. Last 16.

MarquinhosWho is the star player?

Among a squad packed with high-calibre players, Vinícius Júnior still stands out. Traditionally, it is Brazil's No 9 who carries the burden of immense expectation, but this time they will look to their left-winger for moments of magic. Ancelotti and Vinícius combined to win two Champions Leagues with Real Madrid in 2022 and 2024, with the winger scoring in both finals.

How do they play?

Ancelotti has always been a light-touch coach, unwedded to tactical blueprints and allowing elite footballers autonomy on the pitch. Brazil have "only" won the World Cup twice since their genius 1970 side, veering wildly between a more rigid, European approach and a reliance on individual attacking brilliance. The hope is that Ancelotti, likely to use a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, can strike a balance between the two. The Italian has called up Neymar in late change of selection policy, at the expense of Chelsea's João Pedro.

Chances of victory

Managers like to talk up the "good headache" of having a wealth of attacking options, but much will depend on Ancelotti finding the right combination between Vinícius, Raphinha, Matheus Cunha, Igor Thiago and Gabriel Martinelli. With Neymar in the mix, things get more complicated. Full-back looks an area of weakness, and there is still a reliance on Casemiro in midfield. Semi-finals.

Achraf HakimiWho is the star player?

Hakimi covers every blade of grass from right-back, but since the last World Cup Morocco have added Spanish-born Brahim Díaz to their ranks (the player qualified through his father). Díaz was the top goalscorer at the Africa Cup of Nations, and his jinking style and low centre of gravity can be a delight to watch. He will want to atone for missing a penalty in the controversial Afcon final against Senegal. Formerly a youth player at Manchester City, Díaz is now at Real Madrid.

How do they play?

Something of a mystery because Ouahbi only took over from Walid Regragui in March. "The team needs a fresh face, a different energy, and a new perspective with a new coach," said Regragui. The immense physical output of Morocco's players caught the eye in Qatar, especially in their penalty-shoot-out win over Spain, but they also have lots of technical quality in central midfield.

Chances of victory

A tough opening game against Brazil, but have enough quality across the team to progress beyond the group stage. Morocco can finish the tournament as the best-performing African team for the second successive World Cup. Quarter-finals.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde could well be in the shop window at the tournament following Wolverhampton Wanderers' relegation to the Championship. The French-born midfielder possesses that much-prized ability to beat players by dribbling through the middle of the pitch. Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor will be another leading light.

How do they play?

Played a mixture of 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 in qualifying, with Bellegarde as one of their two deeper midfielders. It is fitting that one of Haiti's group-stage games will be against Brazil in Philadelphia; during the country's long hiatus from the World Cup, many football fans supported Brazil owing to a strong sense of cultural and political affinity.

Chances of victory

Only New Zealand are ranked lower than Haiti at the tournament, and any kind of result at the finals will be a historic achievement. Stranger things have happened, but their supporters are currently subject to a US government visa ban which will not help. Group stage.

Scorer of an overhead kick against Denmark in the game that secured Scotland's World Cup qualification, Scott McTominay was named Serie A Footballer of the Year in 2025. His eye for a goal from midfield helped Antonio Conte's Napoli win the league, and in the absence of a first-class striker Scotland will look for his late runs into the penalty area.

How do they play?

Scotland's home wins over Greece, Belarus and Denmark in qualification will live long in the memory for fans, but performances were not especially convincing. Clarke has switched between a back four and five, with the latter a way of getting Robertson and Kieran Tierney in the same team. They generally cede possession and counter-attack in moments, even if midfielders John McGinn and Ryan Christie are adept technicians.

Chances of victory

Scotland are likely to be on the back foot against Brazil and Morocco, but have a chance to go through as one of the eight best third-placed teams. That would give Scotland's fans their first taste of a World Cup knockout tie, anything more would be a bonus. Last 32.

It was Christian Pulisic, but hip issues continue to trouble him, and Tyler Adams will be a combative midfield presence. The player who could steal the show, though, is Folarin Balogun, the Monaco centre-forward who looks sure to grab the No 9 shirt for the hosts. The former Arsenal man scored twice against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League in February, and finished his Ligue 1 campaign with 14 goals.

How do they play?

Since the October 2025 international break, Pochettino has switched to a 3-4-3 formation (a system he used on occasion at Spurs despite generally favouring 4-2-3-1). He has also dialled down the high pressing for which he was revered, sitting a little deeper to protect a lack of pace in defence. The United States have lacked flair for decades, and much will depend on Pulisic being fit enough to unlock defences.

Chances of victory

There will be no shortage of boisterous support, but even the most tub-thumping Stars-and-Stripes wearer knows winning the tournament is not realistic. Hosting the tournament means the group is kind, and they can get through one, or maybe two, knockout rounds. Last 16

Paraguay finished the punishing, 18-game South American qualification with only 10 goals conceded, the second-best defensive record. As he has displayed in the Premier League this season with Sunderland, Omar Alderete's commanding performances have been the bedrock. Julio Enciso and Brighton's Diego Gómez are promising attackers, but Paraguay have not been free-scoring.

How do they play?

Paraguay managed more than 50 per cent possession in just three of their 18 World Cup qualifiers, preferring to soak up pressure and break at pace, with the ever-willing Miguel Almirón an outlet. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay were beaten by Paraguay in Asunción, with the latter victory a blueprint: Uruguay had 71 per cent of the ball but were restricted to just five shots and 0.2 expected goals. Do not expect a goalfest when watching Alderete and Co.

Chances of victory

Given the pattern of Paraguay's games, it would be no surprise if they managed to progress with three low-scoring draws, but their lack of goal threat will surely catch up with them, unless they can take every tie to penalties. Last 32

Ponytailed midfielder and self-styled hipster Jackson Irvine has had an injury-interrupted season with German club St Pauli, but left-back Jordan Bos has come to the fore at Feyenoord. The 23-year-old has hit double figures for goal contributions in the Eredivisie this season, and will raid down Australia's left flank. Uncapped Tete Yengi caught the eye of head coach Popovic after scoring six goals in 22 appearances for Japanese club Machida Zelvia, helping them reach the final of the Asian Champions League.

How do they play?

Popovic has been wedded to a back five, and must decide whether to gamble on the fitness of towering Leicester City defender Harry Souttar who can be a set-piece threat. Sometimes the system is a Ruben Amorim-like 3-4-2-1, but when Australia defend it will look more like a 5-4-1.

Chances of victory

Their wins in qualification came against Lebanon, Palestine, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Japan and Saudi Arabia. This is a limited Australia side, with no Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka or Tim Cahill at the top end of the pitch to carry the team on their shoulders. Group stage

Real Madrid attacking midfielder Arda Güler, still only 21, can be a delight to watch and has the potential to be one of the most creative players in the tournament. He will drift inside to open up the pitch for passes and shots with his left foot. Another 21-year-old, Kenan Yildiz of Juventus, will also be a considerable threat from the left flank.

How do they play?

Turkey have alternated between using a back five and a back four which enables them to squeeze another attacking player in the team. The back five helped them draw 2-2 in Spain, and beat Kosovo 1-0 in the decisive play-off victory. If Turkey use that system, they will push wing-backs Zeki Celik and Brighton's Ferdi Kadioglu forward to offer width, with Güler and Yildiz playing behind the striker.

Chances of victory

If they can retain some defensive solidity, Turkey look a promising team with enough class in possession to reach the knockout stages. Last 32

Jamal Musiala is fit again after breaking his leg at last summer's Club World Cup, and the former Chelsea youth player's ability to play on the half-turn and carry the ball will be a joy to watch this summer. Florian Wirtz could run him very close, and Nagelsmann's task will be to find a system that lets the pair play in tandem.

How do they play?

Nagelsmann is one of the most inventive tactical minds at the tournament and a coach who would be in the conversation for Europe's top club jobs. He has used a mix of formations, but they are only a starting point for a fluid, attacking approach. Germany will end up in something like a 3-2-5 or 2-3-5 shape as they look to dominate the ball and play in the opposition half. There have been 4-0, 5-0, 6-0 and 7-0 competitive wins since the Euros, but defensive instability has reared its head.

Chances of victory

Germany have not reached the semi-finals of a major tournament since Euro 2016, and having been beaten by Spain at Euro 2024, as well as France and Portugal in the Nations League, they could come up short against the best teams. Midfield is in a transitional period following the retirement of Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan, so Bayern Munich 22-year-old Aleksandar Pavlović will have to step up to the plate. However, Manuel Neuer, who retired from international football two years ago, has returned to the team for this tournament. Quarter-finals

Curiously, after his brother played for Villa, Juninho had three seasons with Birmingham City.

How do they play?

There has been a late change of manager with Dick Advocaat returning to the job, having previously stood down for personal reasons. The influence of the Dutch school is clear, with Curacao playing a 4-3-3 through qualifying and looking to build play patiently from the back. The tactical education on offer in Dutch youth football is among the best in the world, and the smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cup tap into it.

Diomande has been linked to Liverpool, as well as other Premier League clubs.

They played a 4-3-3 throughout the Africa Cup of Nations, emphasising the quality of their central midfield options with Sangaré, former Barcelona player Franck Kessié, Porto's Seko Fofana and 20-year-old Trabzonspor player Christ Inao Oulai pushing for starts. Amad and Diomande will offer threat from the wings, but manager Faé will have the option of picking more experienced options such as Nicolas Pépé.

Moisés Caicedo is one of the best central midfielders at the tournament, but needs to make sure his tackling stays on the right side of the line. The Chelsea man epitomises the intensity and defensive aggression that is Ecuador's hallmark.

How do they play?

Ecuador had a stunning defensive record in qualifying, conceding just five goals in 18 games, aided by playing home games more than 9,000 feet above sea level. Paris St-Germain's Willian Pacho and Arsenal's Piero Hincapié provide plenty of ballast, with Caicedo shielding in front, and 21-year-old Club Brugge defender Joel Ordóñez is a fine prospect. There is less talent at the top end of the pitch, where they still rely on 36-year-old former West Ham forward Enner Valencia.

Chances of victory

Playing Ecuador will be like a trip to the dentist, but a dearth of attacking quality will catch up with them eventually. Discipline could be a problem too; six of Ecuador's past 14 matches have featured a red card for either side, so referees could be busy. Last 16

Frenkie de Jong missed Euro 2024 with an ankle injury, but fitness permitting he will be back to pull the strings in midfield alongside Ryan Gravenberch or Tijjani Reijnders. It is very difficult to pick a star from a squad with so many established Champions League players, but De Jong will elevate their play. Memphis Depay is their all-time top goalscorer with 55 goals, but now plays in Brazil at the age of 32.

How do they play?

There is outrage in some quarters whenever the Dutch stray from 4-3-3, but Koeman has generally favoured playing two central midfielders with Justin Kluivert or Xavi Simons more advanced, but Simons has since suffered a serious knee injury. A slight problem for the Dutch is that they have enough centre-backs to pick half a dozen high-class pairings – Van Dijk, Van de Ven, Van Hecke, Hato, Timber and Aké – but not enough forwards of the same grade. They will always look to dominate possession, but had to accept playing without the ball against Spain in the Nations League last year.

Chances of victory

A squad that is a Harry Kane away from being one of the favourites for the tournament, but relying on Depay and Cody Gakpo could prove a limitation. Doubts about Koeman's ability and the possibility of internecine squabbling can never be discounted. Strong on paper, though. Last 16

Likely to be linked with a Premier League move thanks to his performances in the Netherlands; will he be more Mateja Kezman or Ruud van Nistelrooy?

How do they play?

Their attacking play completely overwhelmed weaker opponents in qualification, scoring 54 goals in 16 matches and losing only once (to Australia). Moriyasu was the manager when Japan finished top of a World Cup group containing Germany and Spain in Qatar, when a switch from 4-2-3-1 to a 3-4-3 helped them beat the two European nations. Japan's swift pass-and-move football and aggressive high press caught the eye in March's 1-0 win over England at Wembley.

Alexander Isak endured a difficult first season at Liverpool punctuated by injury, but at his best is one of the most complete centre-forwards at the tournament. He possesses a velvety touch, as well as an ability to dribble past defenders and create his own opportunities – it's just a question of whether he can find his rhythm. Arsenal's Viktor Gyökeres offers a different sort of threat, and could be used in tandem with Isak.

How do they play?

Potter's club teams liked to play a patient passing game, building play from the back and using plenty of rotations. He is not afraid to change systems and use players in unorthodox positions. In the play-offs against Ukraine and Poland, Potter used a 3-4-2-1 formation which could be flipped to a 3-4-1-2 should he want to find room for both Isak and Gyökeres in his team.

Chances of victory

Many nations will be envious of having Isak and Gyökeres to choose from up top, but Sweden failed to win a single game in qualifying, only reaching the play-offs because of their results in the Nations League. That suggests they could suffer in a tough group, but they could sneak through. Last 32

Ellyes SkhiriWho is the star player?

Ellyes Skhiri is a steady presence in midfield, with Champions League and Europa League experience at Eintracht Frankfurt. Former Manchester United academy graduate Hannibal Mejbri is a younger midfield option who could impress. They will look to Copenhagen wide forward Elias Achouri for an attacking threat.

How do they play?

Ex-Nottingham Forest head coach Sabri Lamouchi replaced Sami Trabelsi after Tunisia's last-16 exit at the Africa Cup of Nations. Lamouchi had a decent start at Forest with his defensive organisation making a difference, but that conservative style eventually led to problems keeping the ball and creating chances. Tunisia will try to keep things tight.

Chances of victory

Tunisia will take inspiration from neighbours Morocco's run to the semi-finals in Qatar, but they do not possess the same level of quality. Could struggle in a group with no weak link. Group stage

Eden Hazard has left the stage, while Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku are in the autumn of their careers, so Belgium will look to Jérémy Doku for attacking inspiration. The Manchester City winger is one of the best dribblers at the tournament and will twist the blood of most full-backs he faces. Thibaut Courtois remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and Belgium are well-stocked in this department with Senne Lammens behind their No 1.

How do they play?

Belgium were free-scoring in qualifying, where they averaged more than 3.5 goals per game in a kind group. Invariably play a back four, shielded by Amadou Onana, and try to squeeze as much attacking talent into their team as possible. Will feed the ball to their wingers, and Atalanta's Charles De Ketelaere is an interesting alternative to Lukaku as more of a false nine. Still plenty of attacking talent, but no defenders to match Vincent Kompany, Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen.

Chances of victory

Nowhere near as high as they were in Russia or Qatar and the team are in a post-golden generation phase. Should cruise through a soft group, but defensive vulnerabilities likely to prove their undoing. Squad harmony cannot always be taken for granted. Last 16.

It must still be Mohamed Salah, who played just two of Egypt's three group games in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and scored in both while carrying an injury. Salah will be looking for a new club this summer after leaving Liverpool, and he has strong claims to be considered his continent's greatest ever player. Omar Marmoush can take some of the load off Salah's shoulders.

How do they play?

They reached the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, beaten 1-0 by Senegal when they had just 37 per cent possession and three shots on goal. The highlight of that campaign was the quarter-final victory over Ivory Coast, when they turned a mere 29 per cent of possession into three goals, so they are comfortable playing on the break. Alternate between a 4-2-3-1 and a midfield diamond which allows Hassan to play Salah and Marmoush as a strike partnership.

Chances of victory

If they can run a tight ship and find the stretching runs of Salah and Marmoush, Egypt have a good chance of getting out of a favourable group. Unlikely to go much further though, lacking depth behind the big names. Last 32.

There is something about tournament football that suits strikers in their 30s, and Mehdi Taremi is exactly the sort of player who could attract a cult following. Scored more than a goal every two games across four years at Porto, and now plays for Olympiacos after a disappointing year at Inter Milan. Scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in qualifying. Sardar Azmoun was once hailed as the "Iranian Messi", but has been left out of the squad amid reports he has fallen out of favour with the country's government.

How do they play?

Sitting between Denmark and Turkey in the world rankings is an impressive achievement. Ghalenoei's tactical approach is quite a conservative one, which is perhaps no surprise given Carlos Queiroz's influence on the national team after an eight-year spell in charge.

Chances of victory

Unfortunately, the ongoing US-Iran war and its consequences for the team's participation in North America are likely to attract more headlines than the football itself. Fifa and Gianni Infantino played down the prospect of a boycott, which now appears unlikely, but the situation will remain fraught. Group stage.

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood, undoubtedly. He is New Zealand's all-time leading goalscorer and probably the finest player the country has produced. A very complete centre-forward who is strong in the air and can bring team-mates into play. Wood's Forest season has been disrupted by injury after a stellar 2024-25 campaign in which he scored 20 Premier League goals. New Zealand will hope that means he is fresh for the summer.

How do they play?

New Zealand have only scored two goals or more once in their last 10 internationals, and that came against a Chile team who had a player sent off before half-time. They will try to be obdurate and hope for Wood to snaffle a chance. Very rarely stray from a back four which includes Sheffield United centre-back Tyler Bindon.

Chances of victory

The lowest-ranked team at the tournament and while they could be competitive against Egypt and Iran, unlikely to do enough to progress as one of the best-performing third-placed teams. Group stage.

In a team full of wonderful players, 18-year-old Lamine Yamal still stands out. Every defender knows that the winger wants to jink inside from the right on to his left foot, but stopping him is another matter. Already part of a tournament-winning side at the Euros two years ago, Yamal has extravagant individual skill, but his vision and weight of pass mark him out as a rare talent and surely a future Ballon d'Or winner. Will need to prove his fitness after a hamstring injury sustained in April that ruled him out for the season.

How do they play?

A very familiar 4-3-3 shape, with Rodri or Martín Zubimendi sitting deep and two more offensive-minded midfielders, including Fabián Ruiz, in front of them. Spain want to monopolise possession but Yamal, Nico Williams, Ferran Torres and Mikel Oyarzabal offer the directness and cutting edge some Spain teams have lacked at tournaments.

Chances of victory

One of the teams to beat, with tournament-winning nous and a style of play which should suit the sapping conditions in North America. There is the prospect of a mouth-watering semi-final or even final against France. Final.

He scored four goals in qualifying and is on the books of Serie A club Hellas Verona, and has spent the season on loan in Portugal's top division at Casa Pia. Centre-back Roberto Lopes plays for Irish club Shamrock Rovers and was born in the Dublin suburb of Crumlin.

How do they play?

Under the guidance of Pedro Leitão Brito, their head coach known as Bubista, Cape Verde have developed a bold, front-footed style which belies their status as underdogs in most matches. Qualified on the strength of their home form, winning all five games in the archipelago's capital city of Praia without conceding a goal.

Chances of victory

They might be the second-smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup, but Cape Verde did reach the quarter-finals of the 2014 Africa Cup of Nations so they are not complete tournament novices. Finishing above a country as established as Cameroon in qualifying demands some respect, but even a point or two in the group would be a considerable achievement. Group stage.

How do they play?

Saudi Arabia conceded just four goals in their last six qualifiers, and they will look to defend in numbers once again at the finals this summer. Against stronger teams such as Morocco and Egypt, they have used a 5-4-1 in an effort to contain superior attacking talent. Real Madrid's Federico Valverde is one of the outstanding central midfielders at the tournament, with a terrific engine. His hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League showed he has no shortage of technique, too. Darwin Núñez offers a chaotic threat, but Uruguay do not quite have the firepower of the days when Diego Forlán, Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani were in their prime.

How do they play?

Bielsa sticks resolutely to a flat back four, with either two central midfielders and a No 10 ahead of them, or one holding player behind two No 8s. At club level, Bielsa's teams are distinguished by their high intensity and aggressive, man-to-man pressing, but Uruguay's approach was more conservative in a draw against England in March.

Chances of victory

Qualified with a record of seven wins, seven draws and four defeats in the punishing 18-game South American campaign. This looks a relatively middling Uruguay team but they will be dogged and very competitive. Potential to play Argentina in the first knockout round which would be tasty. Last 32.

It has to be Kylian Mbappé, who could become the first player in World Cup history to score in three finals should France make it that far. Somewhat ominously for the rest, France's attack could be less Mbappé-centric this time with Michael Olise and Désiré Doué establishing themselves since Qatar and Ousmane Dembélé revitalised. Bradley Barcola, Rayan Cherki and Marcus Thuram are also in the mix. Good luck keeping them out.

How do they play?

Not always as well as their talent suggests they should, with Deschamps' conservatism a source of frustration. He would point to his approach guiding France to two World Cup finals. France's full-back options are quite attack-minded, so Deschamps likes to balance that off by playing a midfield pair who will cover those gaps and not be caught forward. The full-backs being wide will facilitate the likes of Mbappé, Olise, Dembélé or Doué cutting inside to get shots off.

Chances of victory

France possess the deepest collection of attacking talent in the tournament and know how to navigate a World Cup. On paper, it should be a team that goes all the way but is it one tournament too many under the same manager? The full-backs are not the best defenders, and they possibly lack an outstanding goalkeeper, but they can outscore teams if Deschamps is willing to lean into that strength. Winners.

Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr have excelled in the Premier League with Everton and Crystal Palace, while Nicolas Jackson's selfless running and link-up play will platform his team-mates. A very dangerous forward line.

How do they play?

The world considered them Africa Cup of Nations winners, before the title was awarded to Morocco as a result of how Senegal's players protested against a penalty decision in the final. Along with Morocco, Senegal looked a class above most of their competition, controlling possession and territory in most matches with the help of a midfield three featuring Idrissa Gueye and Pape Matar Sarr. All departments of the team are strong, with Champions League winner Édouard Mendy in goal.

Chances of victory

Erling Haaland will play in his first major international tournament this summer and his presence surely gives Norway a puncher's chance against any opponent. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard will be the supply line, but his season has been disrupted by injury. Sander Berge, Oscar Bobb, Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sorloth are a very capable supporting cast.

How do they play?

Norway were impressive in qualifying, winning all eight games while scoring 37 goals and conceding just five. With Odegaard injured for some of their 2025-26 fixtures, Norway have at times paired Haaland and Sorloth up front and adopted a more direct style of attacking. It would not be a surprise if they were happy to cede possession in the tournament, allowing opponents to creep forward and leave green grass for Haaland to attack.

Chances of victory

After a 28-year absence from the World Cup, Norway can count themselves unlucky to be in such a tough group. Lionel MessiWho is the star player?

Lionel Messi obviously, but at his swansong tournament he cannot be expected to carry the creative and goalscoring burden alone. Julián Alvarez could well be key, a ball of energy who will close defenders down ceaselessly and is deadly from long-range and direct free-kicks. Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández will try to pull the strings in midfield.

How do they play?

Argentina were head and shoulders above the rest in South American qualifying where they finished nine points clear of second in the 10-team group. World Cup winner Scaloni has been known to switch between a back three and a back four. A very technical team but perhaps not blessed with the ability to cover ground, they will want to play lots of short passes in tight areas and control the ball. How and when Scaloni deploys a 38-year-old Messi will be fascinating.

Chances of victory

The reigning champions will be strong again and should win this group, but can Messi still produce the moments of magic he produced in Qatar? Defensive depth a concern, particularly now Cristian Romero is in a race to be fit after suffering a knee ligament injury for Tottenham Hotspur. Quarter-finals.

Riyad MahrezWho is the star player?

Riyad Mahrez is the highest-profile player but in common with several captains and talismen at the tournament it is a matter of what he has left in his legs. The driving runs and poise of Manchester City's Rayan Aït-Nouri from left-back will be a big part of their in-possession strategy, and he has the potential to be Algeria's key player.

How do they play?

They reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations but were beaten by Nigeria. Algeria tend to play with a flat back four but when they have the ball, it will look more like a back three with Aït-Nouri advanced. Plenty of individuality in forward areas, and they will look to supply Wolfsburg striker Mohamed Amoura, who scored 10 goals in qualifying.

Chances of victory

Algeria caused eventual winners Germany an almighty scare in 2014 but are unlikely to scale those heights again. Could be well-placed in this group to at least progress as one of the best-performing teams in third. Last 32.

Konrad Laimer is a rangy midfielder who will be key to everything Austria do at the tournament. At Bayern Munich, he has sometimes been asked to fill in at full-back but he will play in his best position this summer. The likes of David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic are perhaps a little long in the tooth to take this mantle.

How do they play?

Austria have a number of players with a past or present at Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, hence the appointment of Rangnick who was a founder of those clubs' playing philosophies. Will try to use that shared knowledge to their advantage, and they were certainly one of the most cohesive collectives at Euro 2024. Will be physical and full of running.

Chances of victory

A lack of truly elite individual quality will probably cap their aspirations for the tournament, but they will have great belief in their methods and be an awkward opponent for any side. Last 32.

Mousa Al-Tamari is the first Jordanian to play in one of Europe's big five leagues and is a regular starter on the wing for French club Rennes. Not an unknown quantity at 28, but scored seven goals in qualifying and helped Jordan reach the Asian Cup final two years ago. He was applauded for his sportsmanship at that tournament when, after a contentious red card turned a last-16 tie against Iraq in Jordan's favour, he raised the Iraqi flag as a show of respect.

How do they play?

Finished level on points with Saudi Arabia in the second round of qualifying and runners-up behind South Korea in the third, which looks a promising benchmark. Sellami has settled on a 3-4-3 shape, which will become a 5-4-1 when defending, and Jordan counter-attacked to good effect when taking Morocco to extra time in the Arab Cup final last December.

Chances of victory

Their performance against Morocco suggests they should give Algeria some trouble and they could well prove the most competitive of all the tournament debutants. Difficult to make a case for progression though. Group stage.

Cristiano RonaldoWho is the star player?

In the eyes of many, including his own, nobody can hold a candle to Cristiano Ronaldo, but Bruno Fernandes is in the prime years of his career and comes into the tournament after an outstanding individual season with Manchester United. Vitinha and João Neves will pull the strings in deeper midfield, but Fernandes can provide the magic moments. Lightly raced after United's 40-game season, an advantage against other elite players based in Europe.

How do they play?

Martínez has always been a bold coach who is unafraid to switch formations from game to game and sometimes within game. Win and that is responsive coaching; lose and it unnecessary tinkering. Piecing together so much talent is a challenge that has brought about some inventive solutions, such as playing João Neves at right-back. Like Martínez's club teams, Portugal will look to pass and pass some more. How else could a team with Fernandes, Vitinha, Neves and the indomitable Bernardo Silva play?

Chances of victory

Every chance, with probably the best collection of midfield talent in the tournament in front of a solid group of defenders. They may be found wanting at the top end of the pitch though, and much will depend on whether the presence of 41–year-old Ronaldo proves a help or a hindrance. Pedro Neto and Rafael Leão are streaky, while João Félix's career has meandered. Brazil, France and England have better forwards. Quarter-finals.

Noah Sadiki, the 21-year-old central midfielder, proved himself a talent for Sunderland.

How do they play?

Congo's experience and quality across their back four is reflected in a strong defensive record, conceding just two goals at the Africa Cup of Nations when they lost 1-0 to Algeria in the last 16. From a solid base, they will look to spring forward quickly and exploit space behind opposition defences, with the stretching runs of Wissa a target.

How do they play?

Cannavaro said Uzbekistan's spirited showing in a 2-1 defeat by Uruguay showed that his team can be a "pain in the a---". Uzbekistan have flitted between using a flat back four and a 3-4-2-1 formation, depending on available personnel. There will be a physical deficit to the best European and South American nations, but they will try to compensate with tenacity and a sound technical level.

James Rodríguez, who scored one of the great World Cup goals in 2014, is still going strong as the team's source of creativity, but their biggest threat is Luis Díaz. The former Liverpool winger has been part of Europe's most devastating front three at Bayern Munich, and offers trickery, directness and immense work rate. Díaz scored seven goals and provided three assists in qualifying, and Colombia's hopes rest on his shoulders.

How do they play?

Finished third on goal difference in South American qualifying, which is highly creditable. Of the six nations who made it through automatically, Colombia scored and conceded the most goals so we should expect some open games. They have a front-footed defensive strategy that can leave them exposed, Crystal Palace's Daniel Muñoz will be a very offensive right-back, but their talent is in the final third so it makes sense to lean into it.

Chances of victory

They should have more than enough to qualify from this group, and win at least one knockout round. Last 16.

The top goalscorer in European football, Harry Kane will be a Ballon d'Or contender. England rely on their captain for important goals, and he is also a creative fulcrum when he drops deep to release runners with forward passes. Kane has always been key, but feels even more like an established world star after what he has achieved at Bayern Munich. Perhaps has a question to answer about his physical freshness at summer tournaments.

How do they play?

Good question. Thomas Tuchel has brought more structure and elements of positional play to England's set-up, but the result on the pitch has been underwhelming at times. England's best performance under the German was a 5-0 win in Serbia, when Morgan Rogers played in the role usually reserved for Jude Bellingham. England will look to dominate matches, push players between the lines and get their wingers isolated against full-backs. Tuchel's challenge is finding the right combinations with so many to choose from.

Chances of victory

Have to be considered one of the major players, though history suggests it will be hard for England to thrive at a tournament played in sweltering temperatures. Tuchel has a great cup record though, and the addition of Elliot Anderson to the midfield should be a new string to England's bow. Modric is the biggest name, but if he wins his race to be fit for the tournament then Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol can be the team's outstanding talent. He can play as a left-back or a left centre-back, is comfortable on the ball and good for the odd goal. Found himself the subject of some ridicule after Lionel Messi skipped past him in Qatar, but he is in good company there.

How do they play?

Dalic has been Croatia's manager for nine years now, and they play a very distinctive, possession-heavy game which platforms the quality of their midfielders. That department of the team is a faded force with Modric 40 and Mateo Kovacic struggling for fitness at Manchester City this season. They benefitted from quite a soft qualification group featuring Czech Republic, Faroe Islands, Montenegro and Gibraltar. Used a 5-4-1 in spring friendlies against Colombia and Brazil, perhaps acknowledging they cannot dominate games as they once did.

Chances of victory

Unless England really fall apart, which is always possible, they should be in a tussle for second place. An ageing squad in places, and still a reliance on the old warhorses Andrej Kramaric, Ivan Perisic and Nikola Vlasic going forward. Another deep run through the tournament would be a surprise. Another Manchester City player to feature in response to this question, Antoine Semenyo will be their biggest threat. A two-footed player who can play left, right or through the middle, he is a streaky goalscorer when in form and will be a tough proposition for any defender. Could be up against his team-mate Marc Guéhi when Ghana play England.

How do they play?

Hard to say because they sacked manager Otto Addo in March and replaced him with former Manchester United coach Carlos Queiroz. During his time working under Sir Alex Ferguson, Queiroz was credited with improving United's defensive shape which was the basis for improved Champions League results. Has a reputation for caution and is unlikely to deviate from that strategy. Queiroz has extensive international experience having managed Iran, Egypt, Qatar, Oman, Colombia, South Africa and his native Portugal.
