Trump lashes out over image he says was altered by the New York Times

President Donald Trump lashed out at The New York Times over a photo the newspaper published of his Florida golf resort, claiming the image had been “doctored” to make the property look “filthy.”

The Times reported Sunday that Trump’s decision to host the Group of 20 summit at Trump National Doral Miami drew little pushback compared with the controversy surrounding his 2019 effort to host world leaders there. The muted response, the paper reported, illustrated the extent to which he has “shattered” ethical norms.

On Monday afternoon, Trump responded angrily via Truth Social. His reply, however, focused not on the story’s substance — including that he has embarked on a “brazen blitz of self-enrichment” — but on a photo published of the resort’s clubhouse.

“The New York Times, in writing a story about one of the finest and most successful resorts anywhere in the World, Trump National Doral, in Miami, posted a picture where the facade has been blackened and denigrated by them in order to make it look shoddy, filthy, and just plain BAD,” the president wrote.

Trump posted the Times’ image alongside another photo showing the clubhouse with a bright white facade and surrounded by lush gardens. He claimed the second image was more accurate than the “one doctored by The Times.”

The president — who has a long history of attacking the press — also targeted Peter Baker, who wrote the story, and fellow Times reporter Maggie Haberman, a frequent subject of his criticism. He called them “Third Rate Reporters” who “write about me constantly, never fact checking, or caring, about whether or not their story is true.”

Hours later, Trump escalated his attacks in a separate post, writing: “These people are STONE COLD LOSERS — Totally dishonest. That’s why they’re going TO HELL…”

The Times denied that the image it published had been tampered with.

“This image is not doctored,” a Times spokesperson told The Independent. “It was taken by a Times photographer in 2020 and accompanies our report about President Trump walking back his decision in 2019 to host the G7 summit at Doral.”

Golf has long been one of Trump’s favorite pastimes. In addition to Doral, he owns courses around the world, including in Scotland and Ireland.

He has visited a golf property on 168 days of his second term so far, according to an independent tracker.

Trump previously criticized his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, for spending too much time on the links. “Can you believe that, with all of the problems and difficulties facing the U.S., President Obama spent the day playing golf. Worse than Carter,” he said in 2014.

Two years later, while campaigning for president, Trump promised to take a different approach. “I’m going to be working for you, I’m not going to have time to go play golf,” he told supporters in 2016.

Trump has also faced longstanding accusations of cheating on the course. Sportswriter Rick Reilly explored those allegations in his 2019 book, Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump.

The president has denied cheating, arguing last month that his extensive Secret Service detail makes it impossible for him to do so, even if he wanted to.
