The special edition features a look back at the TV shows, movies, pop stars, athletes, celebrities and headlines that fans couldn’t get enough of at the turn of the century

Let’s look back at the last decade before the new millennium: The 1990s!
PEOPLE has dedicated a special issue to all the things that made the ‘90s unlike any other decade, available now. The issue looks at lots of the things that defined the decade — from Seinfeld topping the TV ratings to Titanic mania sweeping the nation.
In many ways, the ‘90s are more relevant now than ever, as fans and celebrities alike have looked back 30 years for some major inspo. TV’s Love Story, which looked back at the romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, sent young women to their local stores, searching for ways to mimic Bessette’s minimalist style, while their parents were grooving along to the show’s soundtrack, with songs by Dido and Mazzy Star.
PEOPLE’s newest special edition will help some relive their grunge years and, for others, it’ll help them visit what the ‘90s were really about for the first time. That means revisiting shows like Beverly Hills, 90210, which helped make Shannen Doherty, Luke Perry, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling and Jason Priestley household names.
When Friends hit the airwaves in 1994, Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe became America’s besties too, and audiences across the country couldn’t stop talking about whether David Schwimmer‘s Ross and Jennifer Aniston‘s Rachel were really on a break (or asking their hairstylists for Rachel’s iconic shag bob).

And who could forget the iconic talk shows that defined the ‘90s? While The Jerry Springer Show luxuriated in the most controversial topics, The Rosie O’Donnell Show kept things light and fun as she hung out with her friend Madonna, often featured Elmo from Sesame Street and famously fangirled over Barbra Streisand.

But perhaps no TV show was as influential as The Real World. The first season, set in New York, featured seven cast members from different backgrounds all living in a loft while their lives were filmed. Not only did the show spotlight issues of gender, sexuality, race relations and other taboo topics in an engaging way, but it also set the tone for almost all reality TV to come.
PEOPLE’s the ‘90s issue also looks back at some of the thrilling top-charters from the decade, from Garth Brooks to Tupac, from the Spice Girls to Lauryn Hill. There’s also the defining sports stars of the decade, from Michael Jordan‘s dominance to U.S. Women’s National Team winning the 1999 World Cup.
The issue features tributes to decade-defining movies like Pulp Fiction, Thelma & Louise, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Reality Bites, Pretty Woman and Beauty and the Beast, plus how supermodels became the true trendsetters of the ‘90s.
The special issue also features a look back at Michael J. Fox‘s reveal that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and Magic Johnson‘s reveal that he was HIV-positive. Both their announcements helped spread awareness and funds for the diseases.
