The franchise from the Wayans family has always taken inspiration from the *Scream* films, and the sixth *Scary Movie* is no exception, as its plot is an ongoing parody of 2022's *Scream*. And while Sara (Olivia Rose Keegan) serves as a stand-in for Melissa Barrera's *Scream* character, Wayans is bummed to hear too late that the fired *Scream* star would have been down to do his film.

“I wish I’d heard about that," Wayans told *Variety*. "That would have been a lot of fun. I definitely would’ve tried to make that work. That would’ve been a masterful cameo. Maybe for Part 7!”

In the fifth and sixth installments of *Scream *(which, like *Scary Movie*, were released by Paramount), Barrera played Sam Carpenter, the daughter of original Ghostface Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). But, despite being the new lead scream queen, she was dropped by the production company Spyglass Media Group for making pro-Palestine statements on social media and criticizing the actions of Israel in its war with Hamas. *Scream 7 *would then undergo a full creative overhaul, and even with mostly poor reviews the movie outgrossed *Scream VI*'s debut by $20 million.

"I think they lied about the numbers," Barrera previously said, without providing evidence. "I don't think it made that much money." And when the interviewer said *Scream 7* "sucked," Barrera replied, "I know."

At the time of Barrera's firing, production company Spyglass Media Group said it had "zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form." The actress responded by condemning antisemitism, while still emphasizing the importance of using her platform "to raise awareness about issues I care about."

The Wayanses launched *Scary Movie* in 2000, but departed after the 2001 sequel, as Bob and Harvey Weinstein used their power to move on without the brothers for three more films. But once the Wayans family was able to regain control for the recently released sixth installment, Barrera was intrigued by the opportunity to spoof herself.

“I always loved those movies,” she told *Inverse* in 2024. “When I saw it announced, I was like, ‘Oh, that would be fun. That would be so fun to do.’”

Previously speaking to *EW*, Wayans spoke about his desire to return to the humor of the first *Scary Movie*'s release. "What we're trying to do is bring back laughter," he declared. "This is about bringing back comedy the way it used to be. And I think the only way to do it is you have to cancel the cancel culture."
