Nap of the day is Mythological Star in the 5.00 at Ffos Las

Four UK and Irish horse racing meetings are scheduled today, with three on the Flat and a jumps card from Roscommon in the evening.

I am focusing on Ffos Las in west Wales for my trio of bets, and I think it could be a good afternoon for Billy Loughnane, who is looking to extend his lead at the top of the Flat jockeys’ championship. Take a look at my three tips below and then read on for more analysis.

3.00 Ffos Las – Class 3 Novice Stakes (7½f)

Avionics is taken to get off the mark at the third attempt for red-hot trainer Andrew Balding, with the Kingsclere handler having a scarcely believable run of form lately.

After securing Group 1 honours in the King George with Kalpana, he went on to enjoy two winners at Glorious Goodwood, including a Group 3. The week was rounded off with more top-level success, courtesy of Blue Bolt winning the Prix Rothschild at Deauville, and the 53-year-old also had a treble at Chester.

It is not just the recent success of the yard that makes Avionics an appealing bet, of course. The two-year-old took a decent step forward from his debut to finish runner-up behind Undiscovered at Salisbury late last month. That horse was considered good enough to run in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Our pick, a son of Kodi Bear, pulled more than seven lengths clear of the third-placed runner on that occasion, marking himself as a potential winner in waiting. Avionics’ main rival today will be the penalised Perfect Nation, but I will be surprised if he can concede 7lb to the selection.

4.30 Ffos Las – Class 4 Maiden Stakes (1m)

You certainly do not get rich backing 11-race maidens, but I think there is a very compelling case to believe that today could finally be the day for Arbaawy. Though John Butler’s colt has only beaten two rivals in his past two starts, he has run to a solid level on four of his five appearances this season.

Arbaawy has been involved in a couple of decent Class 3 handicaps lately. His effort at Sandown in June, when he understandably tired in the closing stages over 1m 1f, sets a pretty good standard for newcomers Flagbearer and Wootz to reach.

One huge positive for backers of our pick is that Loughnane has been booked to ride. The 20-year-old leads the race to become champion jockey with 84 wins this campaign, and is coming off an excellent week on the South Downs, notably landing the Group 1 Sussex Stakes on board Bow Echo for George Boughey.

I am happy to write off Arbaawy’s last effort, when he was sent off at 13/2 behind subsequent Glorious Goodwood winners Ciarrai Abu and Crest Of Fire. If he runs to his rating of 76, the debutants will have to be fairly smart to beat him, so I think he is worth taking a chance on.

5.00 Ffos Las – Class 5 Handicap (1m)

My bet of the day comes from the penultimate race on the card at Ffos Las, with Mythological Star (nap) taken to make a winning handicap debut.

This three-year-old has improved on each start, and was potentially a bit unlucky to only finish third at Lingfield last time out, having been outpaced before being beaten by three-quarters of a length.

The form of joint trainers Daniel and Clare Kubler increases confidence in the selection. The pair have saddled three victors and a second with their past five runners, and are very shrewd operators.

With Loughnane in the saddle, I expect Mythological Star to comfortably defy a mark of 72. There is plenty of stamina in this horse’s pedigree, and he should keep improving with time.
