In 2027, Star Wars is turning the big 5-0.

Over the course of nearly five decades, we’ve watched the story of Star Wars unfold through a dozen movies and numerous TV shows, from the Skywalker saga to the adventures of a Mandalorian and his adopted son, a little green guy named Grogu (ever heard of him?!). And the franchise isn’t stopping now. Despite a few speed bumps along the way, Lucasfilm and Disney are still cooking up multiple new projects set in a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars is currently in a bit of a transitional period following the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, which underperformed at the box office with the lowest gross in the franchise since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm. While the big-screen continuation of the Disney+ series made nearly double its reported budget, the reduced turnout for the first Star Wars theatrical release in several years is a potentially troubling sign for the franchise, which will try to reclaim its box office standing with the 2027 release of Star Wars: Starfighter.

Though we may never get to see Steven Soderbergh’s Ben Solo movie or another season of The Acolyte (which was good, actually), there are still a few eagerly anticipated projects that may yet come to fruition — including Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian spin-off and James Mangold’s Jedi prequel. Below, Entertainment Weekly breaks down every upcoming Star Wars movie and TV show, including the latest updates on each project and their current status.

Star Wars: Starfighter

Release date: May 28, 2027

Directed by Shawn Levy (2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine), Star Wars: Starfighter is an entirely original story set five years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Ryan Gosling plays new protagonist Kade Auberon, headlining a cast that includes newcomer Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams, among others.

Little is known about the plot, but Disney showed off a few minutes of unreleased footage at the D23 Expo back in August. In the short scene, Gosling’s Kade admonishes a kid (Flynn) for touching his decommissioned Starfighter, which he says is the “fastest ever built.”

“Never heard of it,” the kid says, to which Kade replies, “There’s a reason for that.” The footage cuts to a montage of the Starfighter in action across the galaxy, teasing an action-packed new adventure in the franchise.

There’s a lot riding on Starfighter, the first Star Wars movie that doesn’t feature recognizable or previously established characters and has no connection to the Skywalker saga. Levy’s movie is arguably what the franchise has needed for quite some time — but will the box office receipts back it up?

Ahsoka season 2

Release date: January 20, 2027

Anakin Skywalker’s former Jedi Padawan, first introduced in The Clone Wars, made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian season 2, played by Rosario Dawson. The first season of her eponymous series debuted on Disney+ in 2023 and follows Ahsoka as she reunites with her own former Padawan, Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), and fights to prevent the sinister Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) from rebuilding the Empire and destroying the New Republic.

The first trailer for season 2 premiered at D23 Expo, giving fans their first look at Game of Thrones star Rory McCann as Baylan Skoll, a former Jedi and the series’ antagonist. Baylan was played in season 1 by Ray Stevenson, who died just a few months before the series premiered. Also featured in the trailer is Hayden Christensen, once again reprising his role as Anakin, whose Force ghost continues to advise Ahsoka.

The first season of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premiered in April 2026 and features Sam Witwer reprising his voice role as Darth Maul from The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. New Skywalker trilogy

Status: In development

Back in 2024, it was reported that X-Men franchise vet Simon Kinberg was writing and producing a new Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm. Kinberg is an interesting pick — he consulted on J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, the first film in the sequel trilogy that spans Episodes 7 through 9, and he co-created Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni. But he also directed 2019’s failed X-Men sequel Dark Phoenix, so there’s reason to be cautiously optimistic.

Flash forward to September 2026, when news broke that Jon Watts has been hired to helm the first installment in Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy, which will reportedly continue the Skywalker saga and feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey. Watts previously directed the first three Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland, and helped Marvel and Sony successfully reboot the franchise.

James Mangold’s untitled Star Wars movie

Status: On hold

One of the more exciting projects in development at Lucasfilm is an untitled film from James Mangold, director of 2017’s Logan and 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Mangold was previously brought on to helm a Boba Fett movie, which was ultimately scrapped in 2018 before it was ever officially announced.

At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm announced that Mangold is directing a film that explores the origins of the Jedi and the Force, set several thousand years before the prequel trilogy. “When I first talked to Kathy Kennedy about it, I just said, ‘I just see this opening to make kind of a Ben-Hur or TheTen Commandments about the birth of the Force,’” Mangold said in an interview with Variety following the announcement. “The Force has become a kind of religious legend that spans through all these movies. But where did it come from? How is it found? Who found it? Who was the first Jedi? And that’s what I’m writing right now.”

In her January 2026 exit interview with Deadline, former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided updates on a handful of projects, including Mangold’s untitled film. “Jim Mangold and Beau Willimon wrote an incredible script, but it is definitely breaking the mold,” said Kennedy, who added that the project is currently “on hold.”

Mangold signed an overall deal with Paramount in 2025, which doesn’t exactly boost confidence in his Star Wars movie coming together anytime soon.

Rey’s standalone movie

Status: In development

During Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm also announced a standalone movie featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), the film will be set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and follow Rey, who is now a powerful Jedi Master training a new generation.

Though there have been few concrete updates on the film, Ridley confirmed in a February 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that George Nolfi (2004’s Ocean’s Twelve) was writing the latest draft of the script.

“People have talked about it a lot that the release date often affects films and how quickly things go into production. So the freedom to make sure that this script is the best way to tell this story is wonderful, and I don’t think any fans would want it to be rushed,” Ridley said. “The wait will be worth it. I know what George [Nolfi] is working on, and he is a phenomenal writer. So I’m really looking forward to reading it, and yes, it’s all worthwhile.”

Mandalorian crossover movie

Status: Unknown

The final film announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 was an untitled movie directed by Filoni, set in the same post-Return of the Jedi timeline as the Mando-verse series — The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew.

Asked about the potential for an Avengers-style crossover featuring characters from the various series, Filoni told EW, “We are definitely in the right space. I think it’s going to be a clamoring of characters saying, ‘How do I get in this picture?’ And that’s what Jon [Favreau] and I have been figuring out.”

“Things I think have broken in a good way for us, and people have enjoyed the characters that we’ve been making. So certain opportunities came up the further we went along,” he continued. The status of Filoni’s movie is currently unknown, particularly after the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu. According to The Hollywood Reporter, as of January 2026, the Filoni movie is “on the back burner,” but Lucasfilm has yet to provide an official update.

Lando Calrissian movie

Status: In development

One of the most successful elements of the otherwise polarizing Solo: A Star Wars Story is Donald Glover’s portrayal of a younger Lando Calrissian, the smooth-talking smuggler played by Billy Dee Williams in the original trilogy. Glover and his brother Stephen were writing a Lando TV series, but in September 2023, EW confirmed that the project had become a movie. At the time, the Lando project was on hold due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

During her 2026 exit interview with Deadline, Kennedy revealed that Glover had turned in a script and that the project was “still somewhat alive,” noting that the future of it and other projects (see below) depend on Lucasfilm’s new leadership.

Taika Waititi’s untitled Star Wars movie

Status: In development

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie was announced way back in May 2020. Waititi, who directed The Mandalorian’sseason 1 finale and voices the droid IG-11, was cowriting the script for the movie with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917).

“Taika has turned in a script that I think is hilarious and great,” Kennedy told Deadline, adding that the fate of Waititi’s movie now rests in the hands of Filoni and Lucasfilm co-president Lynwen Brennan.

The Mandalorian season 4

Status: Unknown

Favreau revealed in April 2026 that he’d already written the scripts for The Mandalorian season 4, which would help set up Ahsoka season 2. The filmmaker denied that those scripts became The Mandalorian and Grogu, though it’s possible that at least some of his ideas for season 4 made it into the movie.

In an interview with EW following the release of that film, Favreau described the future of the characters as a “wide open canvas,” and said that he was actively in conversation with Filoni about next steps.

“So I think that there’s a lot of higher-order strategic decisions that Dave [Filoni] is making that this will fit into,” Favreau said, “but from my perspective, I have a lot of notes and ideas as to where I think things might go within this small microcosm within Star Wars.”

Rogue Squadron

Status: Unknown

In 2022, two years after its initial announcement, Lucasfilm pulled Rogue Squadronfrom the upcoming release schedule. Set to be written and directed by Patty Jenkins (2017’s Wonder Woman), Rogue Squadron would follow a new generation of starfighter pilots in the Star Wars universe.

Then, during a 2024 appearance on the Talking PicturesPodcast, Jenkins renewed hope in the film, claiming that she’d signed a deal with Lucasfilm. “We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of Star Wars,” the filmmaker said. “So we will see what happens there. Who knows?”

“They have other directors who have been working, but I am now back on doing Rogue Squadron,” Jenkins added. “We’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”
