Chris Rock Compares ‘Woke 1’ to the Old Testament and Salem Witch Trials: ‘No Forgiveness’

Chris Rock dished the big “problem with wokeness” is it turned its true believers into coldhearted prudes who are unwilling to forgive people for supposed transgressions, no matter how big or small.

The comedy icon weighed in on the “Woke 1.o era” during a Saturday interview with The New York Times in which he compared it to the Old Testament… or what Jews simply refer to as the Bible.

Rock said it was “great” that society became more concerned with how “marginalized” people are treated in recent years, but he said the movement has gone way too far and become ruthless.

“The problem with wokeness is we’re in the Old Testament right now, okay,” Rock said. “The Old Testament has no forgiveness. The Old Testament didn’t work, so they had to write a remix called the New Testament.”

The Interview co-host David Marchese followed up by saying there has been a lot of talk about it lately, especially after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) declared “Woke 1 was crazy!” back in August.

Ocasio-Cortez claimed the Covid-19 lockdowns made everyone a bit kooky and willing to humor extreme ideas, like abolishing prisons and defunding the police. She said those previous positions shouldn’t be held against Democratic politicians in 2026, though.

“The immediate post-George Floyd era was crazy, people say… do you see that moment in time as just, like that was just a crazy moment in time?” Marchese asked. “Or was there anything redeeming about it?”

“I think I just answered it,” Rock said. “You know, again, it’s great to help those who need help. We need more of that. The problem is when you institutionalize it.”

He then said he had a “half a joke” on it: “The Salem Witch Hunts — I’m sure the first three witches they caught were actually f*cking witches. But then you open up a Witch Office and now you gotta start lyin’, now you gotta f*ckin’ make sh*t up, because you’ve got overhead.”
