Eva Marie Saint was married to her late husband, Jeffrey Hayden, for 65 years

Eva Marie Saint left behind a legacy that included two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The legendary actress died at age 102 on Oct. 6, 2026, following her husband Jeffrey Hayden’s death a decade prior. The longtime couple were married for 65 years before he died on Dec. 24, 2016.

Saint was an Old Hollywood icon who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s 1954 thriller On the Waterfront. She went on to star in numerous renowned films, including Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic thriller North by Northwest.

Hayden also worked in Hollywood, albeit behind the camera. He was a TV director and producer known for beloved shows like The Andy Griffith Show and Magnum, P.I.

Saint retired from acting in 2014. Two years before her death, she spoke to PEOPLE about turning 100.

“I certainly don’t feel 100 years old,” the actress said in July 2024. “I continue to take walks out in the fresh air, like watching baseball — especially the Los Angeles Dodgers, and enjoy time with my family and friends. A good life.”

Saint and Hayden met on the subway and tied the knot in 1951. They were married for 65 years before his death in 2016.

In May 2014, Saint recalled their humorously different explanations regarding their relationship’s longevity in an interview with NPR.

“Jeff and I did an interview, and this very prim and proper lady said, ‘Miss Saint, how do you stay married?’ ” she said. “So I become serious and I say, ‘Well, I think you have interests in things that you do together. You certainly have to decide whether you’re going to have family or not.’ So I go on and on. She turns to Jeff. She said, ‘Well, Mr. Hayden, what do you think the secret is?’ And he said, ‘Sex.’ ”

They shared two children

Saint and Hayden welcomed two children during their long marriage. The couple’s son, Darrell, was born in 1955, just days after Saint won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in On the Waterfront.

“I may have the baby right here!” Saint joked when she accepted the Academy Award, per the Oscars.

The couple’s daughter, Laurette, was born three years later, in 1958. When Saint died in 2026, she was survived by both her kids as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hayden was a TV director and producer

Like Saint, Hayden made his career in Hollywood. The New York native was a prolific TV director and producer, with credits on shows like Leave It to Beaver, 77 Sunset Strip, The Andy Griffith Show and Magnum, P.I. He also directed theatrical productions in New York and at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

In 2001, the couple shared the stage for the first time for a production of the play Love Letters, which they performed at various venues over the years in California, Maine and Ohio.

He died in 2016 at age 90

Hayden died on Dec. 24, 2016, after being diagnosed with cancer, per The Hollywood Reporter. He was 90.

According to his publicist, Hayden died at home in Los Angeles surrounded by his family, including Saint.

After growing up away from the spotlight, Saint and Hayden’s daughter, Laurette, followed in their footsteps by pursuing a career in Hollywood.

A producer, Laurette’s previous projects include the TV movies My Very Best Friend, Within These Walls and Just Ask My Children.
