Warning: This post discusses sexual assault, racism, and slavery.
With over 100 years of cinematic history, there’s an endless list of movies regarded as some of “the best films” of all time. BUT not every beloved classic stands the test of time. In fact, some of these all-time favorites are now viewed as confusing and problematic by younger generations.I personally wanted to know which movies haven’t held up over the years, and Redditors came through in this thread by sharing the older films that would 100% be a hard pass for younger audience members, no matter how iconic they are.1. “Came here to say Revenge of the Nerds (1984). LOL. You thought you were banging your boyfriend?... PSYCH!!!!”

20th Century Fox

“A lot of '70s and 8'0s teen/young adult comedies are full of sex crimes played for laughs. Super uncomfortable to watch through a modern lens.”

2. “How about Sixteen Candles (1984)? I think it's kind of a classic, and at the end the boyfriend lets ‘Farmer Ted’ sleep with his girlfriend because she's so drunk she thinks it's him.”

Universal Pictures

3. “I recently watched Grease (1978) with a room full of young people. They were literally horrified by Danny groping Sandy at the drive-in, and fully hated him for the rest of the movie. Also, T-Bird looking up the girls' skirts during one of the starting songs.”

“There is a lot my generation watched on screen, and it didn't hit us the same way it hits the younger generation. They were also totally unimpressed that Sandy changed to win Danny in the end. It was an interesting thing to see.”

4. “Birth of a Nation (1915)”

“Agreed. It's on multiple top 100 lists, and it is horrifying to watch. There is no reason to include it at this point. The only reason to watch is to understand the thoughts of a KKK member, if that's a perspective you want to dive into.”

5. "Breakfast at Tiffany's. That movie is a classic, still popular, and eminently watchable... except for Mickey Rooney. His character is so racist and offensive (and was almost certainly racist and offensive even at the time), painfully not funny, and feels like it's from an entirely different movie.”

6. “Big (1988). This movie is a stone-cold classic. Tom Hanks’s pitch-perfect lead performance — combined with its fun storyline and iconic toy store piano scene — has earned the film a place in mainstream pop culture history. Everyone is familiar with it, even if they’ve never seen it. With that being said, the plot point of a woman sleeping with the main character, even though he’s literally a child in an adult’s body, has caused the movie to age poorly.”

20th Century Fox
“It’s a strange and gross plot point that modern audiences reject, thus ruining the goodwill the movie has built over time.”

7. “Wayne’s World (1992) was pretty much all inside jokes. My kid turned it off after 20 minutes. It was tough.”

Paramount Pictures

“My kids (two boys) hated it. They said the characters were sexist assholes.”
—u/sambeau
8. “American Beauty (1999). The movie feels really weird and, at times, almost embarrassing. The whole plastic-bag-in-the-wind scene was passionate and profound at the time; these days, it is so eye-rollingly cheesy that you can't believe it's being taken completely unironically.”

DreamWorks Pictures
“For as well-received as it was at the time, you can't show this movie to someone under 25 without them wondering WTF was wrong with us for giving this movie all those Oscars.”
—u/Daddict
9. “Gone with the Wind (1939) kinda sucks”

“It has everything wrong with it: nostalgia for plantation slavery, enslaved Black people who are fiercely loyal to their masters, infantilization of African-Americans, a none-too-disguised portrayal of the KKK as heroes, and just to spice things up some more, a supposedly feisty, independent heroine who is the subject of marital rape and has a shit-eating grin on her face the morning after. And yet, it is a masterpiece, cinematically speaking.”

10. “American Pie (1999) is a cringefest watching it today.”

“Imagine a character like Stifler calling everything he didn't like 'gay' in a movie today. It is absolutely the way teens talked in the late '90s, and that was really shitty, and I kinda hate that reminder.”

11. “Overboard (1987). While I like it for what it was intended to be — light-hearted, comedic — it doesn’t take too much effort to unpick its plot and realize that it hasn’t stood the test of time. Perhaps it isn’t considered a classic, but it certainly was a popular film.”

“Yes, Overboard, a funny, popular movie, and my mother's favorite movie, about a rich woman who is... basically kidnapped and forced to clean house and raise four children. But it's okay; she learns that she actually likes playing housewife and raising children!”
—u/kia75
12. “St. Elmo’s Fire (1985). They’re all just boomers complaining about how good they have it. For a young, modern audience, it’s comically alien.”

Columbia Pictures
—u/MasterMacMan
13. “McLintock! (1963) with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. There are two scenes where women are spanked by their men in public. Just yuck.”

14. “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954). It's about kidnapping and sexual assault.”

“Basically, a case of Stockholm Syndrome, emotional abuse, and suggested sexual assault wrapped up in fun song and dance numbers.”
—u/nickorea
15. “The M*A*S*H film (1970). I tried to rewatch that, and it was all 'jokes' about harassing women. Even the ‘big’ gag is about exposing a woman showering to an entire camp of men. As a guy, this was painful to watch, and embarrassing that this is what passed for funny in 1970.”

20th Century Fox

16. “Not sure if this is a hot take, but for me personally, definitely The Exorcist (1973), and I generally like older horror films. It has no shock whatsoever anymore, no suspense, and I found it generally pretty boring. It may have been shocking in its time, but every time I see this film on 'scariest movies ever' lists for today's standards, I cringe out of this universe.”

“This one surprised me. I didn't realize that the villain being half-Chinese meant it would be played in yellowface.”
—u/StraightDust
“There are so many ways women are objectified, and while it was normal at the time, looking through today's lens it’s an uncomfortable watch.”
